For reasons pertaining to common sense, this journal is friends-only. However, I'm not adverse to adding new people. Feel free to leave a message in here with a brief introduction if you please.

8:26 am - Street Fighter IV survey and study
(Crosposted from Shoryuken.com here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=185759 )

I'm currently conducting a study of players in regards to their responses to stress and pressure during matches. I'm particularly interested in the effects of "adrenaline dumps", in both casual play and tournaments, and the various methods of coping with these effects.

After finishing a match, please fill out the online form here: http://tinyurl.com/sf4quiz to the best of your ability. Some of these questions are also designed to find correlations, as well as tier matchup statistics.

For more in-depth research, I've actually purchased a couple of wristband heart beat monitors to give to players during tournaments. Part of this research will involve independently verifying the optimal heart rate of players during "peak performance", among other interesting findings. If you can include your heart beat rate at the end of each match, that would help this research a LOT.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please let me know! I'll set aside several weeks to collect data (at the very least, May 1st) and will release the results of my analysis in this thread, along with a full-fledged writeup.

Again, the form is here: http://tinyurl.com/sf4quiz

Thank you!

Seven Steps to Succeed in your Online Classes

(note: this is a preliminary draft; final version will have pictures.)

Many colleges and universities are offering an increasing amount of online courses as an alternative to students with busy work-schedules, who cannot commute, or who are physically disabled. However, for first-time online students, it often seems that learning how to take the class requires a class just for itself! Here are seven steps to take to be ready for the latest in virtual education.

1: Go Shopping.

This will be the one and only time that you'll actually have to get out of the house. You will need the following supplies:

$2+: One thick (2" or more) binder per class.
$20+: -Two reams of paper per class. (That's 1,000 sheets.)
$20+: -A really good hole puncher. (30 sheets or more.)
$99+: -A laser printer (They're fast, cheap and low-maintenance.)
$80+: -Spare laser toner cartridge. (Always be prepared.)
$8: -Highlighters and Post-It flags (Crucial for quick reference.)
$2: -Sticky labels (for your binders)

This will probably cost you around $250 to $300 for three online courses. However, the time and money saved on commuting costs, textbooks (if your professor provides texts for class), and convenience will MORE than make up for this cost.

You will want the following software: (some more, free software is mentioned later)

-Microsoft Office 2007 (For a free alternative, use Google Documents)
-Adobe Acrobat (NOT Adobe Reader. Used to modify and organize PDF files, and run OCR.)
-Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or other free web browser with Add-on functionality

You can often get commercial software at a much cheaper price by purchasing the Student editions of the same programs. Your college bookstore (or Amazon.com) should have these in stock.

The following equipment is optional:

-UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), a backup battery for your computer (unnecessary for laptops)
-Audio Headset (If you have noisy roommates)

Wait, print? A THOUSAND SHEETS? For an online class? This brings us to Step 2.

2: Print EVERYTHING.

Contrary to what you may think, the perfect "paperless office" will always fall short of your needs. Some professors may provide reading material in .PDF or .DOC format, or in the form of web pages. However, CRT monitors are painful to read from for long periods of time, and there are times when paper is far faster to scan through than digital text. Hey, if you're concerned about all the energy and paper you're burning, just think of all the gasoline you just saved the environment from!

Why the focus on speed? Because your online exams will be timed. If your reference material is in a scanned format without OCR (Optical Character Recognition) support, you will NOT be able to simply hit "Search" to find keywords, because your "text" is really just an image that your computer can't read for you. It's often far better to print out your materials for reference later.

Recommended Firefox Plugin: Nuke Anything Enhanced (because you're not wasting paper on advertisements)

3: Schedule EVERYTHING.

When you first receive your online syllabus, you will usually get a schedule of all upcoming quizzes, tests and assignment due dates. Do yourself a favor and open a Google Calendar account (http://www.google.com/calendar). Make this your browser's home page! This way, you'll never be caught unprepared for whatever is due the next day.

Google Calendar also has an option to send you scheduled alerts via e-mail or directly to your cell phone via SMS text messaging. These reminders have saved my butt from the frying pan countless times.

4: Download EVERYTHING.

If you have a roommate who's seeding torrents or simply have horrible Internet access, you'll want to have crucial material accessible at all times. This is especially critical for professors posting YouTube videos. To download YouTube videos, you can use a variety of tools such as Download Helper for Firefox.

Also, if you don't have a printer immediately available but still want to archive a page for offline reading, here's where Adobe Acrobat comes in handy (Adobe Reader won't let you do this): You'll be able to "Print" pages into PDF format. Just beware that some websites won't convert well into PDF.

Recommended Firefox Plugin: DownloadHelper (for downloading .FLV videos from YouTube)
Recommended Video Player: GOM Player or Media Player Classic + ffdshow

5: Write everything first in Google Documents.

When doing essay questions and homework assignments, you will often have a web page with a fillable form to input your text and click "Submit". You may be tempted to start typing right there on the spot. DON'T DO IT!

If you accidentally close your browser, or the website explodes, or your computer crashes, all of your hard work is gone forever! Use your Google Documents account to open a text document that automatically saves all of your text as you type it in. You will be notified immediately if your internet connection fails, and you can access it anywhere, any time, as long as you can access the internet (like at Starbucks). Once you're done, just Copy and Paste it (also known as "copypasta", Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, respectively) onto the website and submit the text.

6: Wikipedia is your friend.

I've had some snotty classmates tell me, "Oh, you're looking it up on Wikipedia? It's sooooo terrible!" It may not be the most accurate or detailed resource out there, but it's 1) free, and 2) FAST. You will save precious minutes of scanning through garbage Google search results while searching for key terms during your timed exams. Google is necessary when you're doing detailed research, but Wikipedia should be your first speed-reference.

7: Track your grades on a spreadsheet.

A mentor of mine once told me, "If you don't know the score, you can't win the game." You can track your grades by using a spreadsheet like Excel or in Google Docs. Online grades are particularly easy to keep track of because there's a link just sitting there on the website.

Here are some functions that will come in handy:

=SUM() <-- If you have ten grades in cells A1 through A10, then =SUM(A1:A10) will total them.
=AVERAGE() <-- The exact same syntax applies if you want to see your average grade.

Excel is also an invaluable resource for Statistics work. Your school may prefer to use SPSS, but it's not a very easy program to learn, and you cannot create new equations on the fly.

Excel often requires little more than basic math skills to use effectively, as long as you can label and organize the sheet properly. If you don't know how to use it, seriously consider taking a training course and it will prove invaluable over the course of your academic (and professional) career.

6:17 am - Video: Urien Tutorial by Ramza

I know I said no updates this week really (I’m still working on the project) but Magnetro sent this over to me and I figured it was worth a look for those of you wanting to know how to break the game with Urien’s Charge-Partition techniques. The editing is flat-out horrible but the information is the TRUTH.

What I really need to do is to stop playing DotA and start waking up early so I can do this stuff.

1:44 am - New Scans of Street Fighter 4

sf4-3.jpgsf4-1.jpgsf4-2.jpgsf4-4.jpg

These are scans sent to me by Shogo from a magazine, featuring more of the Old-School cast of Street Fighter 4! Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief and Blanka are each featured here, and they actually look pretty good. Since the original mirror for these is down, I’m hosting these for convenience. Just click on an image for a full-size view. Thanks, Shogo!

Hi everyone- this week (aside from school starting up), I’ll be constructing a new tournament resource page to be up when I also write up a Feature on running your own tournaments. Features are major projects of mine, so this week’s updates will be delayed. Thank you for your understanding.

11:24 pm - Toy Tuesday: Persona 3, Mario Galaxy

smg_funyufunyu_mascot3_shop.jpgSorry about the late update- first time I’ve missed one so far (excluding Feature articles, which are really quite intensive and require research). Anyways, we’ve got two treats so far, one from NCSX and the other from Play Asia.

First are these cute little funyu-funyu keychains from Super Mario Galaxy- It’s the full set, and you can squeeze them and they pop back to their original shape. That Ghost Mushroom kinda creeps me out, though.

persona_3_kirijou_face_shop.jpg Next, -holy crap, it’s Mitsuru. I seem to recall a Mitsuru figurine whose skirt you could remove (like Sion Eltnam Atlasia’s skirt), so this one probably does not feature the same level of perversity fanservice. But if you’re a Persona 3 fan, you won’t really care either which way. Now, apparently there are plans to take this figure set to the domestic (American) market as well, and if that’s the case, well, things are looking good for the Persona series, aren’t they?

Links: Super Mario Galaxy funyu-funyu (NCSX) , Persona 3 Mitsuru Kirijo (Play-Asia, Affiliate)

Edit: I changed the link for Mitsuru from NCSX to Play-Asia because it’s actually 10 bucks cheaper to order from the latter. Sorry for any confusion!

9:21 pm - Video: Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Hell freezes over)

Slightly off-schedule: The player “Ken” is actually a friend of mine who I met at Family Fun Arcade a while back. Tall, black and handsome, he’s originally from Boston, and now resides in Japan… where he ended up winning a fricking Street Fighter Zero(Alpha) 2 tournament at Mi-Ka-Do.  This tournament apparently occured in October.

In other news, irrefutable evidence that Justin Wong was trained by the French surfaced yesterday… and a Boeing 747 Flight at LAX is delayed due to abnormal weather patterns resembling airborne pigs.

8:10 pm - Video: A-Cho Game Center, Osaka: Guilty Gear XX Accent Core

This is a tournament video from A-Cho Game Center, one of the top competitive fighting game arenas in Western Japan. It’s from a Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core tournament featuring a ridiculously insane performance by “Osaka B”, a Faust player who manages to score an OCV… TWICE. This video features one of them.

9:08 pm - Video: Twinkle Star Sprites Match

This is a Japanese Twinkle Star Sprites match between 503(Sprites) and Kattachiyo(Really Till). For those unawares, Twinkle Star Sprites is one of the first versus shooter games ever made. It might even be the first. And if nothing else, it’s sickeningly cute.

A quick primer on the rules: You get two bombs, chargeable attacks, special attacks that can’t be killed like a typical enemy, and a Boss attack. You can either send the latter two by charging your super meter, or you can get a successful Reversal combo against the flashing fireball attacks.

A flashing fireball typically occurs like this: You fire off a 12 hit combo, sending three normal fireballs to your opponent. Your opponent manages to get a combo at the same time, and the area-effect explosions not only send three normal fireballs your way, but bounces back YOUR three fireballs at you. However, because they were yours in the first place, they now come back in a flashing state, which means if you bounce them back again, they reincarnate as un-counterable Special attacks, or as a Boss attack (depending on how many you hit in a combo).

Also, if a match takes too long, a cutesy version of Death appears, and his touch is an instant kill. The longer a match goes on, the harder he is to defeat, and the faster and more persistent he becomes.

Really Till, by the way, is a fairly low-tier character; her Charge attack has sucky range, sucky damage and no directional ability. It’s also fairly easy to dodge her Special attacks (those pudgy dragons) since they only travel in one direction and tend to appear ahead of you, not on top of you. However, she has a three-star(Max) agility rating, so she’s able to dodge just about anything.

Sprites, the transformed-with-bubz version of Ran, is a fairly basic character, if balanced. You can try the game out on GameTap (download their free client first), but for a true arcade experience, you’ll have to find a Neo Geo machine with the MVS cart installed.

And yes, this game is typically 2/3 rounds. However, most players aren’t good enough to survive for this long.

3:51 pm - Toy Tuesday: Rubber Chocoduckything

chocoboduckyToday we’ve got a little treat from NCSX: Chocobo Rubber Duckies. I really, really don’t need to say anything more about this, except that if you don’t get one of these, you have no soul.

As an aside, it appears that NCSX now has two storefronts with completely separate databases. You may need to register with the new store (no frills, not seemingly accessible from the main page). Also, this item ships in April.

4:28 pm - Video: Super Battle Opera 2007 3rd Strike Semis

YouTube legend TheShend has made a reputation for himself of posting the best in 3rd Strike videos on the internet. (He would normally put up our Denjin RanBat vids too but we had an in-house YouTube plan that ended up falling flat on its face. >_<) Today is a feature on last year’s Super Bowl/World Cup/Olympics of arcade fighting games, Super Battle Opera.

The teams are:

Team Kokujin-San vs. Team Fourth Eternal Blizzard
Yuki Otoko (Akuma)   Umezono (Chun-Li)
Hirai (Ken)   Shiro Itachi (Makoto)
Momochi (Yun)   Matsuda (Yun)

This video is in multiple parts, so to watch the entire thing, you’ll have to check out the “Related Videos” on the right. The highlight of the video is the comeback that Momochi makes against Shiro Itachi near the end.

6:30 pm - Video: I Wanna Be The Guy (Indie Hell), Bionic Commando Rearmed

So there’s this indie game out there, a hardcore mashup of Megaman, Metroid, Castlevania and aRgH that’s known as I Wanna Be The Guy. The rules: You die in one hit, but you get unlimited lives, save points, and the freedom to explore the entire labyrinth. It breaks more copyright laws than Napster, but it’s an amusing source of speed runs, provided that you lack the intestinal fortitude to beat this game. Thanks to Nicholas Eckert aka Vidstudent for the link.

The other game video I’d like to highlight today is Bionic Commando: Rearmed.

… Just watch the movie, okay? *_*

4:21 pm - Toy Tuesday: Pac-Man Head, Vic-Viper

Those crazy plush Pac-Man heads worn by employees of Namco at E3 have been available on the net for people savvy enough to find them, but it’s not common knowledge that Namco has a store dedicated to this stuff. I’ve got a whole set of Ghost plushies (among other things) myself.

vicviper.jpg

This Vic Viper figure has also been available for a while, but it’s cool enough that it deserves some coverage. Featured in the Skygirls anime, there’s also a Red (P2) and Green version of the model that goes on sale in February.

Note: I’ll be keeping an eye out for the newest batch of Mario bop-activated sound plushies. When they do come out for preorder, it’ll be an emergency post and not part of the normal Toy Tuesday update. Also, as a disclosure notice, the links to the Vic Viper models are Affiliate links, meaning I receive commission from them (something like $3.80 for each one sold), but I receive nothing for the Pac-Man heads. Standard practice will involve an (Affiliate) tag next to any links for products at the bottom.

7:07 pm - Video: [MBAC]West Toast 9, Arlieth vs Nerina

This is a video from a recent Melty Blood: Act Cadenza ver.B tournament at Family Fun Arcade in Granada Hills, CA.

Matchup:

For the record, this match is heavily against Nero’s favor. Red Arc’s full-screen punishing abilities, zero-startup aerial fireballs and high attack priority are all capable of shutting down Nero’s ranged attacks, summon setups and corner traps. Fortunately, Red Arc isn’t capable of dealing massive amounts of damage at a time like other top-tier characters, but her upgraded air fireballs between ver.A and ver.B gave her a pressure game so effective that few characters have an adequate method of stopping it. Also, Nero is a low-damage character, averaging between 2300-2800 damage per combo, but has the highest defense in the game. More often than not, he’ll have to rely on a strategy of attrition, especially against more agile characters who can do 4500+ damage per opening.

Melty Mechanics

One feature unique to Melty Blood is the Damage Reduction system. Players must press a button right before an attack hits them to reduce the damage inflicted. Good players can soak up to 10-12% of a combo’s damage through successful reductions.

Melty Blood also has something akin to a Parry from SF3:3rd Strike, which is the Ex-Shield. However, unlike Parries, an Ex-Shield carries a 60% damage reduction for the subsequent combo. For someone who relies on Ex-Shields to compensate for difficult matchups, this can be a pretty severe handicap. Here’s to hoping that the system is adjusted for the next game in the series, Actress Again.

10:16 am - A Zen/Tao thing, yo
A thought came over me today.

In Zen, there is a parable about the difficulty of getting a dog to look at the moon by pointing at it. Invariably, the dog will look at your finger instead.

There's a simple and elegant way of facilitating this: Violence.

"Whenever anyone asked him about Zen, the great master Gutei would quietly raise one finger into the air. A boy in the village began to imitate this behavior. Whenever he heard people talking about Gutei’s teachings, he would interrupt the discussion and raise his finger. Gutei heard about the boy’s mischief. When he saw him in the street, he seized him and cut off his finger. The boy cried and began to run off, but Gutei called out to him. When the boy turned to look, Gutei raised his finger into the air. At that moment the boy became enlightened."

Most people, however, are not as "fortunate" as the boy. Because this sort of 'silent transmission of dharma' could only be cultivated in the setting of a temple(it culminated in the street), it falls far short of a practical(principled) method of practicing Zen in an everyday context. That begs the question, does modern practiced Zen have principles? Well, of course it does, but that doesn't mean more than a spare handful of actual enlightened practitioners exist(The same could be easily said of any religion, Christianity included). We may be looking at a story taken out of context, but:

"With his oft-pictured gentle and sagacious appearance of later years, Suzuki is revered among many in the West as a true man of Zen. Yet he wrote that “religion should, first of all, seek to preserve the existence of the state,” followed by the assertion that the Chinese were “unruly heathens” whom Japan should punish “in the name of the religion.” Zen master Harada Sogaku, highly praised in the English writings of Philip Kapleau, Maezumi Taizan, and others, was also quoted by Hakugen [a Rinzai Zen priest and scholar teaching at Hanazono University in Kyoto]. In 1939 he wrote: “[If ordered to] march: tramp, tramp, or shoot: bang, bang. This is the manifestation of the highest Wisdom [of Enlightenment]. The unity of Zen and war of which I speak extends to the farthest reaches of the holy war [now under way]”" (Victoria, 1997).

And that's all I really need to say about that.

To the warrior, things are best seen in simple black and white. For the peacemaker, avoid the dualities of hell and strategize from the vantage of heaven.

Both tasks suck.
